Chapter 13
Faith had to get out of that room. She didn’t care what Zane had said about staying put. She needed air. Grabbing her coat, she made her way through his bedroom without stopping to inspect every surface for clues to the life he led.
The heady scent of spice and soap drifting around the wake of air she created as she dodged the corner of the king-size bed made her head spin. Of course, his smell would be sexy, and full, like a strong cup of tea.
Her knee caught the corner of the bed. She leapt forward like a dancer out of practice and collided with the solid chest of one Zane Cutler. He gripped her arms and steadied her before she could tumble to the ground.
“Are you okay?” He eased her away but kept his hands on her arms.
Her skin tingled in the places he touched. What else could those hands accomplish? She shook her head, forcing herself to focus on the mission to get air and not get into his bed.
“You’re not okay? Is it your leg?” He reached for her leg.
She moved back. “Yes. No. I mean, I am okay. Thank you.” As okay as she could be with all that was happening.
“Where were you going? I told you to stay here.” The concern that had passed over his dark eyes was replaced with the emotionless glare.
“I needed some air. It’s too small in that room.”
“You could’ve opened the window.”
“Not the same thing.” She wanted to make something right tonight if it was the last thing she did. “I’m sorry about all of this. I didn’t mean for you to fight with Sloane. Call her back. I’ll find another way to deal with my problem.” She didn’t want to be the person that came between family. She would never have a chance with Zane if Sloane didn’t like her. A sister had to always approve of the girlfriend.
She needed to get her head on straight. Nothing could happen between her and Zane. She couldn’t even tell him the whole truth. After what happened at the Christmas tree farm, he wouldn’t be interested in her if he ever was.
“Sloane will get over it. She’s heated right now. That’s the way she operates. Get mad first, think second. It’s a Cutler family curse.” The smile made a small reappearance on his face.
Her shoulders took a rest from holding up her ears. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Come downstairs. I’ll make us something to eat, and you can fill me in on your past.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“Well, I am.” He took her hand.
That simple gesture shouldn’t give her so much comfort, but his strong grip around hers made her want to bury herself in the protection of his arms. It had been so long since anyone else carried the burden of her emotions for her. Her parents were the last people she could rely on, and they weren’t very good at emotional support.
“Sit.” He pointed to the kitchen table. The word wasn’t filled with a command, but with an understanding that he would take the lead.
